I mentioned earlier that we were working on some ‘Aesthetic upgrades’ for our convention games. Here they are – starting with our new board!
It’s a MONSTER MAT! At 6×10 feet – it’ll cover the entire table at a convention! It barely fit in Mark’s wargaming basement yesterday – I can’t even use it in my own home!
Awhile ago we ‘shrunk’ Silent Fury by reducing ship movement and weapon ranges with the intent to be able to play on a 20×20 hex board (down from our original 32-hex space mat). This was mainly so we could get the game down to ‘dining room table’ size with a board that had smaller hexes, but it also meant that combined with our giant mat, there’s lots of room to enlarge those hexes.
And bigger hexes means you can fit bigger ships in them.
Our JHIS ships – Nathan’s painting skills have improved, and instead of continuing to acquire random models that looked good, we went for a whole fleet’s worth of consistent vessels. These guys are slow and tough.
Opposing JHIS are the Vandar – fast, maneuverable, and fragile. I love these models – we got both fleets from the Cold Navy line.
Even at a distance this will be a far better looking game than anything we’ve brought to a convention before. I’m really looking forward to this one.
JHIS in last night’s playtest scraped by with a narrow victory – Vandar almost got the Cyclops off the board, but concentrated fire from those forward cannons brought down the fleeing ship.
Vandar is looking for a rematch, and they’ll get it the weekend after this one at Fall In! If you’re around, we’re running two games on Saturday – Distress Signal and Nemesis Day!
